NEPOTISM IN BOLLYWOOD
Nepotism and Mediocrity complement each other and without the one others can not prevail. The Idea of Nepotism in Our Country is way much wider than we believe it.
A General Overview
In Our Country, there is an unending saga of Mediocrity and favouritism in all type of industries, firms, Politics etc. Or we can just say its everywhere.
Nepotism as described in the dictionary as the practise among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving or offer them Jobs. Favouring one over the other is human nature with each with its own reasons. Favouritism has been a way of life since birth, in family, with parents, at school as well as ta the place of work.
In the past few years, there are many incidents occur that calls for serious introspection on nepotism and favouritism in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood).
The debate on nepotism starts openly in the Indian Film Industry in the year 2019, after Kangana Ranaut (Indian Actress, Producer) appeared in an episode of "Koffee With Karan".And she called, Karan Johar (Indian Filmmaker, Producer, Director) the "Flag Bearer of Nepotism".
The nepotism is like a fatal infection. Which widely spread and Infect-effect the health of Hindi Film Industry so badly, and it faces by everywhere in the industry, by Directors, Actors, Screenwriters, Editors, Lyricists, Singers, Music-Composers, Cherographers, Cinematographers, Sound-Designers etc.
Historical facts and relations of Nepotism with Hindi film industry
Before we start talking about Nepotism, Mediocrity, Favouritism and anything else. We must Know the History of Nepotism, and history of the Hindi film industry.
When Bollywood acquired "Industry" status in May 1998 and the corporate studio got into the act, there was a belief that things would change. Unfortunately, the scenario remains largely Unaltered.
The present-day Bollywood or the Hindi Film Industry is still largely controlled by a handful of families that emerged out of three essential sets of people. Those who came into the industry from Punjab in the 1940s and 1950s, the Actors, Directors and Writers who broke in during the 1970s and 1980s.So the roots of these archaic parties of Bhai-Chara and nepotism and affiliated biases run deep.
It was many decades ago, When no "Kapoors", "Khan's" or "Bhatts" used to rule Indian film industry (Bollywood), the fact that performance and stardom used to walk hand-in-hand is no more completely valid these days. While 'Kapoors' are Known to be the "Flag Bearer of Nepotism", almost every second actor in the Indian Film Industry is the flag bearer of families, Which have producers some of the greatest actors, ironical is the fact that these flag bearers are not born actors.
In old-time studio System in any film industry, the Carrier of any artist is managed by the production houses. It is still quite a bit like that. Production houses want business via entertainment of the audience, so film producers always chase only successful star who lands a face value and who, they think will assure guaranteed returns.
A View of Today's Nepotism
As per Maslow's theory on the hierarchy of needs, Self-actualisation and esteem are the two highest after the physiological requirements are taken care of.
Anubhav Sinha ( Indian Filmmaker) Says- "We have as many examples of nepotistic failure as we do of 'Outsider' success"
Satyajit Ray (film director, writer, and illustrator) Once Remarked that the Indian audience doesn't have any respect for art and aesthetics.
Nepotism is also a reason why till date, we do not even have a good number of artists or Bollywood stars with International recognition.
The Cure
Nepotism isn't going to end. It is up to the audience to appreciate the craft and aesthetics if they actually wish to avoid the dreadful fate of young artists soon.
The One/Only Power or Solution is the audience or viewers. They have the ability to honour artistry.
